Joelle & Michael
I had the honor of capturing Joelle and Michael's engagement photos just a few months back in Michigan. You can check that out over here. Since that point, I have gotten to know Joelle and Michael pretty well and have gotten to see their wedding vision turn into a reality. Joelle had a very specific vision for her wedding day which I loved. It had so much detail and planning put into it and I was absolutely ready to capture every second of it.
getting ready at the shinola hotel
Joelle and Michael got ready at the Shinola Hotel in Detroit, Michigan. One of the most important things to Joelle was making sure we captured all of her beautiful details. A pearl bag, two pairs of shoes, and gloves with "til death do us part" embroidered on them were just some of the many beautiful details I was so excited to capture. The gloves are actually by Anthea Bridal, by Asha Bailey and are absolutely to die for. You can find them here. Detail photos are the perfect way to curate and tell your love story through personal belongings. The attention to detail that was put into these details was just immaculate so I had to do it justice.
While I was with Joelle getting ready, my second shooter/hubby, Joe, was with Michael getting ready. Joelle and Michael didn't have a wedding party, so we spent the morning really taking it slow and easy and it couldn't have been more perfect.
Shortly after getting ready it was time for everyone to head to the ceremony. Joelle and Michael had their ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD for short). It's a very modern space that showcases a ton of beautiful artwork. Joelle and Michael wanted to do something a bit more fun and untraditional for their wedding space, so it was fitting to use MOCAD for that very purpose. The ceremony space was decorated beautifully. Beautiful florals stood next to Joelle and Michael as they looked deep into each other's eyes committing themselves to one another. The aisles were lined with lit-up candles that made the space look very romantic and sort of ethereal.
Once these two exchanged vows, they were officially husband and wife - woohoo! After the ceremony, we moved on to taking portraits of the two newlyweds. Joelle had a very specific vision for what she wanted her photos to look like and where she wanted to take them so I made sure to listen to all of her suggestions. Since Joelle and Michael grew up in the surrounding Detroit area, they know of a ton of unknown spots that made it perfect for their portrait locations. One of those is a neighborhood with a beautiful cobblestone footpath. It was completely random but completely beautiful all at the same time. The Fall foliage was at its peak and it looked straight out of a Hallmark movie if you ask me.
Once we were finished outside, we made our way back to the Shinola Hotel to take some fun flash photos. Not only that, but Joelle had planned on a dress change, so this was the perfect opportunity for that.
Once we finished with those beautiful hotel photos, it was time for us to make our debut at the reception. The reception was held at The Eastern, and while the lighting is a bit dimmer, the space was decorated to the nine's. Everything from the ceremony to the reception decor and florals were designed and curated by Parsonage Floral, who did an absolutely stellar job. I fell in love with every single tiny detail and it perfectly flowed with Joelle and Michael's vision for their wedding day. Joelle and Michael had beautiful and touching speeches from their dads before moving into the first dances. The rest of the night was spent eating some BOMB food and dancing the night away. What could be better than that?
