Ensign Peak Trail and Overlook

On the shorter side, Ensign Peak Trail and Overlook is a low stress, low effort way to get an incredible backdrop for your session. With views of Downtown Salt Lake City, the Great Salt Lake, and several surrounding mountain ranges this trail provides a lot of diversity for a low cost of entry. Located due north of downtown this hike is very accessible.

  • .9 miles out-and-back
  • dogs allowed on leash
  • moderate difficulty but can be muddy, wear waterproof shoes

Living Room Lookout Trail

Gaining it's name from the couch shaped rock formations at the top Living Room Lookout Trail provides views of the full Salt Lake City Bowl on clear days. Be aware that this route has very little shade so bring plenty of water in the summer months. Pro tip: parking at the Natural History Museum is free and almost always available.

  • 2.3 miles out-and-back
  • Dogs allowed on leash
  • micro-spikes for the way down are recommended

Mount Van Cott Loop

Located on the North-East side of SLC, the Mount Van Cott Loop is one of the least crowded hikes on this list. On the shorter side, it is still considered a challenging trail as it is on the more steep side. Going counter-clockwise will make the descent more steep, while clockwise will make for more of a workout on the way up!

  • 2.7 mile loop
  • dogs allowed on a leash
  • micro-spikes recommended in the winter but not always necessary

Donut Falls Trail

The only hike on this list that is rated as "easy" Donut Falls Trail will not leave you huffing and puffing. This trail turns back after reaching a waterfall that falls through a donut hole cave. Located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, this trail will not provide wide angle view backdrops for your session, but will give you a more intimate mountain feeling. Please note that parking limitations and winter closures do add an additional mile to this trail.

  • 3.3 miles (4.3 in winter) out-and-back
  • dogs are not allowed
  • spikes may be necessary for the last 50 feet (or slide down for adrenaline rush!)

Circle All Peak

If elevation is the name of your game, then let's capture your memories on the Circle All Peak trail. The yellow leaves in fall are stunning and the snow covered aspens in winter are a total vibe. This trail passes through potential avalanche areas so be sure to check here for reports.

  • 3.4 miles out-and-back
  • dogs are not allowed
  • snowshoes are a must and poles recommended year round

Mount Wire via Emigration Trailhead

Located right next to the Hogle Zoo, Mount Wire via Emigration Trailhead has expansive views in all directions. There is an old airway beacon at the peak, and if you want to combine abandoned industrial with mountain views I am all in! This route is not for the faint of heart, so come prepared to work for your photos.

  • 3.6 miles out-and-back
  • dogs allowed on a leash
  • spikes are necessary for both mud and snow

Grandeur Peak West

Grandeur Peak has such incredible views that I had to include both trails to get there. The west approach is significantly shorter, but has a much greater elevation change. This trail begins close to Parley's Nature Park, and is promoted as the best sunrise hike in Salt Lake City.

  • 4.4 miles out-and-back
  • dogs allowed on a leash
  • spikes are necessary, this is a difficult climb

Grandeur Peak East

The Grandeur Peak East trail entails an additional 1.5 miles and 1,100 feet of elevation change. It is recommended to begin this hike right at sunrise and spend 90 minutes getting to the summit. Although I am not a natural early riser, for these views and memories I will be there early!

  • 5.9 miles out-and-back
  • dogs allowed off-leash on odd-numbered days, on-leash on even days
  • micro-spikes are beneficial but not necessary
  • $5 fee per car for canyon entry on your way out

Salt Lake Overlook via Desolation Trail

This is the longest "moderate" hike on this list so if you want to put some distance in without having to work too hard for it, Salt Lake Overlook via Desolation Trail may be your destination. This is a heavily switchback trail that terminates at one of the best west facing views in the valley. So pack a dress and some water and let's make your mountain elopement happen!

  • 4.8 miles out-and-back
  • dogs allowed off-leash on odd-numbered days, on-leash on even days
  • spikes recommended
  • $5 fee per car for canyon entry on your way out

Sundial Peak Via Lake Blanche Trail

Stopping at Lake Blanche for your session or elopement would be more than enough, but if you are up for a full adventure let's go all the way to Sundial Peak! Following the ridge there is some light scrambling on this trail but it is passable in both the summer and winter. Come ready to devote an entire day to this hike/session combo!

  • 10.1 miles out-and-back
  • dogs are not allowed
  • spikes necessary and cramp-ons if you wish
